Logging has been traditionally used as a debugging tool for understanding what an application is doing. As organizations move to highly distributed, microservices based applications, the value of logging data plummets because a single request can be executed not only by many threads within a single process, but also by many other processes. Trying to infer the causality from the logs, or even to get a consistent picture for a single request becomes impossible without the use of techniques like distributed tracing. In this talk we show how small changes in the logging APIs allow combining logs with tracing data to produce highly contextual picture of request execution with much finer granularity than the regular logs can support.
